Course Overview
Training at Nekobukai follows a traditional Shotokan Karate curriculum, developed through decades of practice and study. Classes combine technical instruction, physical conditioning, and partner work in a structured and progressive way.
Students focus on gradual, disciplined development rather than quick results. Training emphasises precision, body awareness, balance, and control.
Structure of Training
Training progresses from simple to complex, and from individual practice to interactive work.
The Neko-Bu-Kai Shotokan Karate Course offers a wide range of study elements, beginning with the three fundamental pillars: kihon, kata, and kumite. These include striking techniques (ate waza or atemi), blocking techniques (uke waza), kicking techniques (geri waza), punching techniques (tsuki waza), throwing techniques (nage waza), and falling techniques (ukemi waza).
Kihon – Fundamentals
Basic techniques of stance, movement, strikes, blocks, and kicks.
Kihon establishes balance, coordination, timing, breathing, and posture.
Without solid fundamentals, advancement has no foundation.
Kata – Formal Exercises
Structured sequences of techniques.
Kata develops concentration, rhythm, precision, and the internalisation of movement principles.
It is a method of studying strategy, timing, and body mechanics in a structured form.
Kumite – Partner Practice
Controlled partner training ranging from pre-arranged exercises to free sparring.
Kumite develops distance, awareness, reaction, and composure under pressure.
These elements are not separate disciplines but complementary aspects of one system.
Physical and Technical Development
Training includes:
-
Strength and conditioning appropriate to level
-
Flexibility and mobility work
-
Coordination and reflex development
-
Study of timing and distancing
-
Application of techniques
-
Selected study of joint control and pressure principles
Each level builds upon the previous one through consistent practice.
Progression
Advancement is based on skill, understanding, and consistent effort. Students focus on mastering each stage before moving to the next, ensuring that fundamentals are firmly established.
Progress is not measured by speed or external recognition, but by the ability to integrate kihon, kata, and kumite into a coherent, disciplined practice. Each step builds on the previous, reinforcing technique, timing, and awareness.
The pace respects each practitioner’s rhythm, while commitment and regular attendance are essential.
Karate-Do is a lifelong study: growth comes from repeated practice, careful observation, and continuous refinement of both body and mind.
Who the Course Is For
This course is suitable for:
-
Beginners willing to commit to structured, methodical learning
-
Practitioners seeking traditional Shotokan training
-
Students interested in technical depth rather than purely competitive practice
Regular attendance and disciplined engagement are essential.
Training Environment
Classes are conducted in a disciplined, attentive atmosphere where focus and respect are constant. Instruction emphasises precision, posture, and awareness of both one’s own movements and those of training partners.
Mistakes are treated as opportunities to learn, and students are encouraged to cultivate control, patience, and composure. The dojo upholds traditional etiquette and a clear structure of instruction, ensuring that every exercise reflects the principles of Shotokan Karate and the values of the Nekobukai Karate School.
In this environment, students experience the practice of karate as a rigorous, immersive, and structured discipline – developing technical skill, physical control, and mental clarity through consistent, guided effort.
KARATE SCHOOL
Nekobukai operates within a traditional Shotokan framework established through direct study and long-term dedication to the art.
The school was founded on decades of continuous training that began under Master Cividini and continued through sustained practice, study, and exchange with recognised masters of the discipline. This continuity informs both the technical curriculum and the standards upheld within the dojo.
Instruction is rooted in precision, structured progression, and respect for the principles transmitted through its lineage. The aim is not to reinterpret the art for modern trends, but to preserve and practise it with clarity and integrity.
What is karate-do
Karate-Do means “the way of karate.”
It refers to the study of karate as a disciplined path of long-term development – not solely as a sport or competitive activity.
While training may include controlled sparring, the emphasis is on precision, structure, awareness, and self-mastery.
